1. Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF)

We’re aiming big with this endeavor, to do something unconventional in order to make a real impact on a level that expands beyond our Western walls!

Our goals are big, hairy and audacious:

    • $5,000 in 2010 for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to help find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes
    • $2,250 for Friends of Maiti Nepal to provide a safe home and education for three victims of sexual trafficking and abuse in Nepal & India for one year

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation - Goal of $5K

The chief mission with this journey across India is to raise money and awareness for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Diabetic research is a cause close to our hearts and one for which we feel pressed to help find a cure to, as our teammate Jim is living with Type 1 diabetes.

An estimated 285 million people in the world will live with diabetes in 2010, making this a truly global issue. 70% of the current cases of diabetes occur in low- and middle-income countries. Considered "The Global Capital of Diabetes" with an estimated 50.8 million people living with diabetes, India has the world's largest diabetes population.

Type 1 Diabetes lasts a lifetime, striking suddenly, usually in childhood and can lead to blindness, amputation and in severe cases, death. There is no known cure for Type 1 Diabetes. With no known environmental or lifestyle cause (doctors hypothesize there is a hereditary component), children and adults with diabetes simply cannot produce blood sugar. Type 1 diabetes requires daily monitoring and fueling of insulin, dietary restrictions and exercise.

  1. Friends of Maiti Nepal

We’re aiming big with this endeavor, to do something unconventional in order to make a real impact on a level that expands beyond our Western walls!

Our goals are big, hairy and audacious:

Friends of Maiti Nepal - Goal of $2,250

With all the natural disasters and turmoil occurring in the world, we feel the need to raise funds that truly can make a difference in people's lives. Friends of Maiti Nepal seeks to put an end to preventable tragedies affecting women and children on a daily basis.  Over 12,000 Nepalese women and girls will be taken from their homes and forced into the human sex trade this year. You can make a difference and help lower this statistic. Last year alone, Maiti Nepal rescued 1,747 women and children.  In Nepal, girls as young as six are at risk of being sold to brothels in India, which is why Friends of Maiti Nepal is the second charity we have chosen to raise funds for with this endeavor.

Friends of Maiti Nepal exists to provide help, support, protection and rehabilitation to Nepali girls and women who are victims, or have been victims in the past of crimes such as domestic violence, trafficking for flesh trade, child prostitution, child labor and various forms of exploitation and torture.

Your donation will go to the prevention, advocacy, rescue and rehabilitation of these victims. The amount of $2,250 we are aiming to raise will enable 3 victims of sexual trafficking and abuse to live in the Maiti Nepal Child Protection Home and receive formal education for one year.

With your help, we can make a difference in the crusade to end human trafficking!
